Genre means a certain category of book, or type. Our library contains many books in many genres. Below are some of the major categories that we focus on.
Nonfiction
Informational Books Informational books contain facts and details about a subject. They often contain features that are found in nonfiction books such as table of contents, index, glossaries, charts, maps and pictures.
Biography A biography is a book written about a person's life. It contains facts about that person and is written by someone else.
Autobiography An autobiography is the story of someone's life written by that person.

Fiction
Fantasy Fantasy has unrealistic characters, such as talking animals and unrealistic events, such as flying brooms and traveling through time.
Examples: Harry Potter books, The Wizard of Oz, The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Realistic Fiction Realistic fiction is a story that is made up. The setting, character and events are all fake, but they could happen in real life.
Examples: Frindle, There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom, Wonder
Mystery A mystery is a story in which the character is focused on solving a crime or unusual problem.
Examples: The Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew stories, The Westing Game, 39 Clues
Historical Fiction Historical fiction is a made up story created by the author. The setting and many details are based on real historical events.
Examples: Little House on the Prairie, Number the Stars, Bud, Not Buddy, Dear America
Science Fiction Science fiction is a made up story that has a focus on futuristic science or technology. The setting might be in space or on a made up planet.
Examples: A Wrinkle in Time, Star Wars, Animorphs, Among the Hidden, Aliens for Breakfast
Fairy Tales A fairy tale is a type of folk tale. They often tell a story of good vs. evil that may involve magic and royal characters. Fairy tales and folk tales are stories that may have been passed down through the generations.
Examples: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin
Fables A fable is a type of folk tale that ends with a lesson. The characters are always animals that talk and have human-like behaviors.
Examples: The Tortoise and the Hare, The Goose Who Laid the Golden Egg. Country Mouse and City Mouse
Poetry Poetry is text that focuses on expressing thoughts, feelings and emotions, often using rhythm and rhyme. Poetry usually includes figurative language.
Examples: Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, A Light in the Attic
