Library Expectations
Students in 1st through 4th grades visit the library once each week. We will check out and have a lesson during each 40-minute class period. The lessons are based on materials we go over in class. We begin the year with an orientation/review on procedures and Library policies. We will cover using the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) and how to find materials both on the catalog and on the shelves! As part of our curriculum, we do many book-based lessons, also. Not every class will result in a graded lesson. However, there will be a checkout grade for each regular library class.
Grades
In addition to work based on the library curriculum, each student's grade includes points earned based on whether or not materials are checked out and returned in a timely manner, in good condition. Each time a student comes to the library, they are expected to check out two books. If they do so, they will earn 20 points for that class period. If they check out one book, they earn 18 points, and they earn 16 points if no books are checked out. If a student is not finished with a book, they are able to renew the book two times without penalty.
* It is up to the student to ask that books be renewed...it is not automatic. Students can only be graded on what they do during class time. If a student has not returned a book for more than a month, one additional point will be subtracted for each late book.
*If a teacher assigns a book report or project requiring a certain type of material, students can renew the book as many times as need be until the assignment is due. It is still the responsibility of the student to ask that the book be renewed. Once the due date for the project has passed, the book needs to be returned to the library as soon as possible.
*If a book is lost or damaged, please contact me as soon as possible. It may be necessary to replace a damaged book, but we will try to fix it if possible.
